About this calculator
How Long Will My Savings Last? is a free tool that answers one of the biggest retirement questions in simple terms.
What it does
You enter your savings, spending, Social Security and other income. It shows the age your savings run out in typical markets, your chance of lasting to 90 and 95, and the changes that would help most.
How the math works
- Year by year. Each year, your spending rises with inflation. Social Security (which also rises with inflation) and any pension cover part of it, and the rest comes out of savings.
- Growth. Savings grow at a typical yearly rate for how they're invested: about 3% for cash and CDs, 4.5% for a cautious mix, 6% for a balanced mix and 7% for mostly stocks.
- Good and bad years. To find your chances, the calculator runs your plan 1,000 times with returns that rise and fall around those typical rates, as real markets do.
- Social Security start age. Checks are reduced or increased using the Social Security Administration's rules for a full retirement age of 67.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't include taxes, investment fees, health care shocks or changes in spending as you age. It isn't financial advice. For a full plan, talk with a fee-only financial planner.
